Board Member Spotlights

For Barb Singleton, serving as the Layette Coordinator for the Christ Child Society of the Quad Cities isn’t just a role — it’s a calling rooted in compassion, experience, and a deep love for mothers and babies.
With just three words, Barb captures the essence of the Christ Child Society: Helping Build Families. And that’s precisely what she’s been doing since joining the organization a year ago, using her background as a labor and delivery nurse to bring hope and support to those who need it most.
Barb oversees one of the chapter’s most cherished initiatives: the layette program. She leads efforts to raise funds, purchase baby items, and coordinate the assembly and delivery of tote bags filled with newborn essentials for at-risk mothers. Working with four local hospitals and several community agencies, Barb ensures that each layette is tailored to the needs of the families they serve.
“What drives my passion for the Christ Child Society mission,” she says, “is knowing that what we do directly affects moms and babies’ daily lives and helps them to have a better start.”
Her work is both practical and deeply personal. Inspired by her sons and grounded in her Catholic faith as a member of Saint John Vianney Parish, Barb views her service as an extension of love. She’s learned that small gestures of generosity can make a lasting impact. “Showing love and support to a new mom can help her be a better mom and give her at-risk baby a better start,” she said.
She encourages anyone considering joining the Christ Child Society to take the leap. “It will be the most rewarding and concrete volunteer work you will do,” she says. “You’ll be changing lives in a very real and immediate way.”
Outside of volunteering, Barb recharges by spending time with her dogs and her husband, Mark. She also brings a touch of humor and heritage to every room she enters, proudly claiming descent from “no less than seven leprechauns by direct matrilineal descent.”
As the National Christ Child Society celebrates over 137 years of changing the future for at-risk children, volunteers like Barb Singleton exemplify the heart of its mission. Through every layette she assembles, Barb reminds us that building strong families begins with compassion, connection, and a commitment to serve.
