When Beth Peters first attended a Christ Child Society (CCS) board meeting three years ago, she was simply seeking a way to give back to the community. Beth and her husband, John, are parents to a daughter, Collette. They are members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rock Island, IL. Encouraged by a couple of friends already involved with the organization, Beth decided to explore what it was all about — and it turned out to be a life-changing choice. “I’ve always had a desire to help mothers and children,” Beth said. “When my friends invited me to a meeting, I thought, ‘Why not?’ Time has flown by since then, and I can’t imagine not being part of this group.” Now serving as the Recording Secretary on the CCS board, Beth plays a crucial role in ensuring the organization operates smoothly. She takes notes during board meetings, records the minutes, and submits them to the President for review. However, for Beth, the essence of her work extends far beyond administrative tasks. “The most rewarding part has been the connections I’ve made with other people in the Quad Cities who are looking to make an impact — whether big or small — in the lives of mothers and children,” Beth shared. One of Beth’s proudest moments came from an unexpected source—her daughter. “For her 5th birthday party, my daughter collected items for the Christ Child Society,” Beth recalled with a smile. “I was so proud of her for thinking of others, especially moms and babies. It was a powerful reminder of the impact this work can have, not just on those we serve but also on the next generation.” Beth’s passion for the CCS mission is especially evident in her support of the Women’s Choice Center. “Fundraising for our joint efforts with the Women’s Choice Center is so important to me,” she said. “It’s not just about material support — it’s about showing these mothers and children that they matter.” Her involvement with CCS has also strengthened her spiritual life. “The opening and closing prayers at board meetings are a reminder to think of others, even those outside of my immediate circle,” Beth said. “Prayer and service go hand in hand.” As for the future of CCS, Beth hopes to see growth in membership, especially among young adults and families. “Expanding our membership would allow us to do even more for the community,” she noted. She’s particularly excited about the upcoming Playcrafters fundraiser this summer, which promises to be both a fun and meaningful event. Playcrafters Barn Theatre will be putting on the play, Miss Nelson is Missing, on June 26, 2025, at 7:30 pm. The cost will be $25 for adults and $18 for children ages 17 and under. This is a fundraiser for CCS, and tickets will go on sale April 2. Beth advises anyone thinking about joining CCS to “Attend a board meeting! Reach out to a current member and ask about their involvement. Volunteering at a layette assembly or service project provides the best way to witness the impact firsthand.” When asked about her favorite CCS tradition, Beth didn’t hesitate. “Showers of Love is such a special event. The joy and sense of community it brings are incredible.” Beth, who went to an all-girls high school with only 34 graduates, cherishes the close-knit connections CCS fosters. Aside from volunteering, she likes to spend time with her family, exercise, and read. “Christ Child Society has become more than just a volunteer opportunity — it’s a source of purpose, community, and faith,” Beth said. “And I’m so grateful to be part of it.”
