Meet At-Large Board Member: Cindy Corrigan
For Cindy, joining the Christ Child Society board represented more than just an opportunity to give back; it was a calling to help nurture an organization dedicated to supporting young mothers and children in need. “I felt a strong need to help recruit more members to our society,” Cindy said when asked what inspired her to join the board. After being involved with the Christ Child Society for about two years, Cindy has already made a significant impact, successfully recruiting at least eight new members from Iowa and one from Illinois. She first learned about the organization through a friend on the board. As the board’s recruitment lead, Cindy focuses on expanding membership to enhance the society’s reach and impact. “Our chapter can only do so much with the number of people we have,” she explained. “I want this organization to grow and become more involved, like other Christ Child Society chapters across the country.” For Cindy, the most rewarding aspect of serving on the board is knowing that her efforts directly support young mothers. “Just knowing what it must be like for a new mother to open one of the layettes and see the precious little clothes, books, and diapers — especially for single mothers or those who have no one to buy these things for their baby — that’s what drives my passion,” she said. Her hands-on involvement has created many memorable moments, but assembling the layettes is close to her heart. “Every time I put layettes together is a special moment for me,” she said. She also enjoys participating in the society’s Head Start events, which provide additional support to families. Cindy is the author of Kalvin and Kaiser's Family Fun Day and Kalvin and Kaiser's Very Busy Day. She has generously donated numerous copies of her books to Head Start students through the Choosy Events hosted by the Christ Child Society, which promotes literacy and fosters a love of reading among young children. Cindy noted that beyond the immediate impact of helping new mothers, her involvement with the Christ Child Society has enriched her personal and spiritual life. “This is the first organization outside of my church that I have ever been so involved with,” she shared. “I’ve learned how a small organization can have an impact on so many new families.” Cindy hopes to see the society grow over the next five years, with more members and resources to expand its outreach beyond infants to assist older children in need. Upcoming events, such as a flower-arranging workshop and a production of Miss Nelson is Missing, reflect the society’s commitment to building community and raising funds for its mission. Cindy's response was simple and powerful when asked what advice she would give to someone thinking about joining the Christ Child Society: “Come see what we do and how this organization impacts so many lives.” In addition to volunteering, Cindy enjoys singing (even though she jokes that she “can’t carry a tune”), playing games, and socializing with others. She and her husband, Marty, are members of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf, IA. Inspired by Jesus and Mary and fellow society members, Cindy remains dedicated to strengthening the Christ Child Society and supporting its mission of providing love, care, and essential resources to mothers and children in need. She describes society in three words: “loving, caring, and thoughtful” — qualities that clearly reflect her own approach to service.
